3rd Title for Wyatt

15 September 2002
Jonathan Wyatt claimed his third world mountain running crown with a brilliant solo performance at the World Mountain Running Cup in Innsbruck, Austria.
The Valleys star added the 2002 title to the ones he won in 1998 and 2000 to complete another highly successful year, in which he also represented New Zealand with distinction at the Manchester Commonwealth Games. Wyatt completely dominated the Innsbruck field to cross the finish line almost three minutes clear of the second-placed runner. As well as the steep climb, 1300 metres vertically, athletes had to contend with bitter cold and sleet that saw a number of runners suffer. Athletics New Zealand quoted New Zealand team manager Barry Ellis saying Wyatt had found the
going tough, particularly in the final section, but added he was elated with the win.
"Many of the athletes were in real trouble out there" commented Ellis. "I don't think the organisers were ready for this." The New Zealand men's team placed ninth in the teams competition. That followed the silver medal won by the women's team the previous day. Melissa Moon, defending her world title, finished 22nd. Wyatt is remaining in Europe to contest further events in the mountain race series, which has already seen him lead four fields home.
